Tonight Alive - Live On The Other Side UK Tour
Back in November 2014, me and my best friend, Chloe, took a trip to Camden, more specifically KOKO, to watch Australian band, Tonight Alive, for the first time.
I had already heard prior to the gig of The Summer Set, a band that were opening alongside Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! who were new to me. However, saying this I thoroughly enjoyed C!NCC! more than The Summer Set, although both completely delivered for being just an opening act. When you think about it, opening acts are usually underrated as most people, if not all, are going primarily for the main act, however it's a great way for bands to promote their music to new listeners and crowds, and it definitely worked when I attended this gig as Chunk! are now one of my favourite bands to listen to.
The crowd were a type that I had never really witnessed before, especially during the opening acts when you looked over the sea of people just nodding their head in time, it was actually a little creepy. But as soon as TA came on, everyone was so in to it, and it was such a great atmosphere!
Not being to many gigs at this point ("gigs" as in not large concerts at the O2, which I had been to plenty of) I wasn't sure what to expect from the crowd, especially when the music isn't too hard yet still has that feeling that makes you want to punch someone in the face. But the crowd just seemed to enjoy every second, and I think a good crowd that doesn't care about what others are doing or what they look like or what height they are, like you would do with younger crowds *cough* 5SOS gig *cough*, it just meant that you could enjoy the music and performance a lot more, and that's all that I care about. In fact, it was this specific gig that got me in to wanting to attend more venues and seeing more bands live that are smaller as the crowds are so great and it really is an entertaining night.
They opened the set with 'The Edge', the theme song for The Amazing Spiderman (which is one of the greatest films ever; Andrew Garfield depicts Spiderman to a T) and ended with Lonely Girl, before starting the encore which finished the whole night with 'The Other Side', ironically chosen as the album is called 'The Other Side' and the tour was called 'Live On The Other Side' (get it, because they're from Australia and being in the UK they are live from the other side). However I thought, although it was a given that the set had to end with this particular song, it's quite slow and honestly it makes me sad listening to it, and usually for the end of a show you want to end on a high note, with a fun and upbeat song, like 'Listening' or 'Breaking and Entering', however I think it was adamant that they were to end with TOS, so you can't really argue, especially as it didn't make a huge issue and everyone still managed to mosh to it (?).
Also, they performed a great rendition of 'Let It Land' and 'Amelia' that were both acoustic, and even though the stereotypically, you'd think the crowd wouldn't be in to a break after 'Bathwater' to play a couple of acoustics, it was greatly appreciated and everyone loved the performances.
Overall, I would probably say that so far this gig has been my most favourite, as the crowd have been so great and seemed like they appreciated being there, and seeing one of my favourite bands for the first time was truly an honour, seeming as I didn't think they'd be coming to the UK any time soon being from Australia. To top the whole day off, Matt came from behind his drums to stand at the front and told us that he doesn't think he's ever spoken on stage before but he just wanted to say hi to his mum and dad that had come out to watch him perform (aww).
If you have the chance to see Tonight Alive any time soon I seriously recommend you do as it was one of the best nights I've ever had.
